Gender-Role Deficit

Gender-role deficit – a term used in certain psychological frameworks to describe the incomplete development of gender-related role capacities or patterns resulting from restricted opportunities to explore, learn, or enact them.

A gender-role deficit may develop when particular gender-related roles or forms of behaviour were directly or indirectly prohibited, discouraged, or negatively evaluated by significant people in a person’s social environment during childhood (Hornostai, 2004, p. 149).

The term should not be equated with gender nonconformity or with departure from traditional gender expectations. It is relevant only when restricted role development causes significant distress, limits personal autonomy, or impairs interpersonal functioning.
