Queer Studies
Queer studies – an interdisciplinary field of research that examines sexuality, gender identities, gender expression, and the social norms through which sexual and gender differences are defined, regulated, and represented.
Queer studies pays particular attention to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other non-normative identities and experiences. It also critically analyses heteronormativity, cisnormativity, binary conceptions of sex and gender, and the ways in which sexuality and gender intersect with race, class, ethnicity, disability, and other structures of social inequality.
The field developed partly from Gay and Lesbian Studies, but is broader in scope: rather than studying only particular identity groups, queer studies also questions the stability and naturalness of identity categories themselves.
