Abuse

Abuse in intimate relationships – a pattern of psychological, physical, sexual, or economic violence that occurs within close relationships and is often disguised as care, concern, or protection. For example, total control over a partner may be presented as anxiety for their safety: “I need to know that you are all right.”

In different historical periods and cultural contexts, certain forms of violence may be normalized and recognized as acceptable models of behavior. This is reflected, for instance, in sayings such as “If he beats you, it means he loves you,” which legitimize violence by presenting it as a form of affection or emotional attachment.
