Masculine Personal Nouns
Masculine personal nouns – nouns that denote male persons or are grammatically marked as masculine. In many languages, such nouns have traditionally been used not only to refer to men, but also as generic forms referring to people regardless of their sex or gender. Examples include words such as pilot, writer, professor, director, and similar occupational or social designations.
According to some feminist scholars and activists, the widespread use of masculine generic forms contributes to the linguistic invisibility of women and symbolically reinforces the higher social status of men. For this reason, the use of feminine personal nouns or feminitives is often proposed as a way to restore gender-linguistic balance and make women visible in language.
