Manspreading
Manspreading – also referred to less commonly as mansitting – is the practice, typically associated with men, of sitting with legs spread widely apart in public transport or other shared spaces, thereby occupying more space than one seat or encroaching on adjacent seats. The phenomenon is sometimes described as a form of “transport machismo.”
In many cultures, gendered differences in sitting posture remain clearly marked, suggesting that manspreading is primarily a cultural practice rather than a behavior determined by men’s anatomical characteristics.
It should be noted that manspreading is not only, or not primarily, a feminist issue, but also a matter of public etiquette, spatial respect, and consideration for others in shared environments.
