Patrilineality

Patrilineality – from the Latin pater, meaning “father,” and linea, meaning “line” – also referred to as patrilineal descent or patrilineal filiation, is a kinship system that establishes descent through the father’s, or male, line. Under this system, the father’s name, property, and sometimes status are inherited.

Patrilineality is opposed to matrilineality.
