Triple Oppression

Triple oppression – a theory that emphasizes the interconnection between three forms of oppression: class oppression, racism, and sexism.

The concept of the triple oppression of Black women was popularized in the mid-twentieth century by African American communist and feminist Claudia Jones. Jones argued that the oppression experienced by Black women on the basis of race, class, and gender occupies a central position in relation to other forms of oppression.

Interpreting this problem through a Marxist framework, she suggested that the liberation of Black women, as those subjected to the most intense and intersecting forms of domination, would necessarily contribute to the liberation of all people affected by racism, class oppression, and sexism.
