Feminist Studies
Feminist studies – an interdisciplinary field of academic inquiry that uses feminist theories, methods, and critical perspectives to analyze gender, power, inequality, embodiment, sexuality, representation, knowledge production, and social institutions. Feminist studies examines how systems of domination and privilege are produced, justified, reproduced, and challenged in social, cultural, political, economic, and symbolic life.
Unlike women’s studies, which historically placed women’s lives and experiences at the center of research, feminist studies has a broader analytical focus. It explores not only women’s experiences, but also the social construction of femininity and masculinity, gender norms, patriarchal structures, intersectional inequalities, and the relations between gender and other axes of identity and power, such as class, race, ethnicity, sexuality, age, disability, and nationality.
