Gender Depolarization
Gender depolarization – the reduction of all differences between men and women to a narrow range of differences, primarily those related to biological and reproductive distinctions. With complete gender depolarization, the biology of sex would become “minimally present” in social life (Bem, 2004, p. 261).
According to Sandra Bem, under conditions of gender depolarization, the entire range of human experience would no longer be divided into culturally gender-based categories. People of different sexes would no longer be culturally identified by differences in clothing styles, social roles, personality traits, or sexual and emotional expressions within partnership. All these cultural markers used to recognize sex would become no more significant than eye color or shoe size is today (Bem, 2004, p. 261).
