Glass Walls
Glass walls – horizontal gender segregation of labour, in which women have less access to professions and types of activity that subsequently provide significant opportunities for vertical career advancement.
Glass walls contribute to the concentration of women in sectors that are less profitable, provide less access to financial and economic resources, and therefore offer less access to positions of power. For example, in the fields of culture, health care, or social welfare, career prospects are often more limited than in managerial or financial sectors.
Thus, where “glass walls” exist, the limitation of vertical advancement is already predetermined by the choice of professional field.
