Gynopia / Women’s invisibility – the cultural invisibility of women and the failure to recognize women’s presence, experience, perspective, and role in social, political, intellectual, and historical life.
Gynopia is characteristic of patriarchy-based culture. It is openly manifested, for example, in traditional history, which is largely presented as a history of wars and political upheavals, while women are almost absent from the narrative.
From the perspective of gender and feminist theory, gynopia denotes the symbolic and historical erasure of women from dominant narratives of culture, politics, knowledge, and social development.
