Mother-Right Family

Mother-Right Family – one of the historical terms used to denote a matriarchal form of union.

The word family is used here conventionally, since the family had not yet developed as a small social group and social institution. People lived in large matrilineal kin groups, sometimes numbering 120 or more, while only the earliest social restrictions governing sexual relations between women and men were beginning to emerge, marking the formation of exogamy.
