Personal Identity / Self-Identity
Personal Identity / Self-Identity – the unity and continuity of a person’s life, goals, motives, and life orientations, as experienced by an individual who understands themselves as an agent of action.
Personal identity is not a particular characteristic or collection of characteristics possessed by an individual, but their selfhood as reflexively understood through the terms of their own biography. It is manifested less in the individual’s behaviour and other people’s responses to it than in their ability to sustain and continue a coherent narrative – the story of their own self – which preserves its integrity despite changes in its individual components.
