Vira
Vira – a monetary penalty for murder under Ruska Pravda (Rus’ Justice), paid in favour of the prince.
Vira was of three kinds. A double vira of 80 hryvnias was paid for the killing of a prince’s man or a member of the senior princely retinue. A simple vira of 40 hryvnias was imposed for the killing of an ordinary free person. A half-vira, or poluvirie, of 20 hryvnias was paid for the killing of a woman or for severe bodily injuries to a man, such as the cutting off of a hand, leg, or nose, damage to an eye, and similar injuries.
