Yin and Yang

Yin and Yang – one of the fundamental pairs of Chinese philosophy, expressing the idea of a universally dualized world and taking concrete form in an unlimited series of oppositions: dark and light, passive and active, soft and hard, internal and external, lower and upper, earthly and heavenly, and, accordingly, feminine and masculine.

The etymological meaning of yin and yang is the shaded and sunny slopes of a hill or riverbank.
