Cisgender Privilege
Cisgender privilege – a concept that describes the social advantages, rights, recognition, and status granted to cisgender people because their gender identity corresponds to the sex assigned to them at birth, while transgender people may be denied the same recognition, safety, legitimacy, or access to rights.
Cisgender privilege is manifested in the fact that cisgender people are usually recognized by society, institutions, documents, language, everyday communication, and social norms as “normal” or self-evident. Their gender identity is generally not questioned, pathologized, or treated as requiring explanation or proof.
By contrast, transgender people may face social exclusion, discrimination, misrecognition, legal barriers, medical gatekeeping, violence, or the denial of their gender identity.
