Gender Culture
Gender culture – an individual and personal characteristic, a part of the general culture of the subject, which includes gender competence, a gender worldview, specific value orientations, and models of behavior.
Depending on an individual gender worldview, a person’s gender culture may be formed according to either a patriarchal or an egalitarian type. A person’s patriarchal gender culture is a component of their general culture based on traditional ideas about the dominant position of men in the family and society. A person’s egalitarian gender culture is a component of their general culture based on, and directed toward, the realization of the principle of gender equality (Sozaev, 2008, pp. 426–430).
Gender culture, like general culture, has its own structure, which includes the following components:
- Cognitive – aimed at forming a person’s sex self-consciousness on the basis of ideas about oneself as a representative of a particular sex, the content of gender roles and contemporary gender stereotypes, and the characteristics of female and male personality;
- Emotional and value-based – the recognition of the priority of universal human values and equal rights for persons of different sexes, an orientation toward partnership relations and egalitarian marriage;
- Behavioral – involving the implementation of internalized models of gender roles in one’s own life through the practice of corresponding actions in activities that are not typical for one’s sex, through respect for the other sex, and through adequate communication between sexes/genders (Vykhor, 2006, p. 110).
