Gender Dysphoria

Gender dysphoria – significant psychological distress or discomfort associated with an incongruence between a person’s experienced gender and aspects of their sex assigned at birth, bodily characteristics, social recognition, or gendered treatment by others.

Gender dysphoria may concern the body, social role, forms of address, legal gender designation, or other gender-related experiences, and may vary in intensity and duration. It is not synonymous with being transgender or gender-diverse: many transgender and gender-diverse people do not experience gender dysphoria, while gender nonconformity itself is not a disorder.

Gender dysphoria should also be distinguished from gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation. Distress may arise from bodily incongruence, from social rejection, discrimination, or misrecognition, or from a combination of these factors.
