Gender Nonconformity
Gender nonconformity – also referred to as gender nonconformism or gender variance – nonconformity with social norms of sex-role or gender-role behavior.
The term is usually used in relation to children who prefer games, toys, or activities that are conventionally considered atypical for their sex/gender. Gender nonconformity may persist into adulthood or, in some cases, first appear in adults.
In a relatively small number of cases, gender nonconformity may be associated with transgender identity or gender incongruence; in most cases, however, gender-nonconforming behavior in children may be temporary. Gender nonconformity should not be confused with gender identity itself or with clinical diagnoses related to gender dysphoria.
