Gender-Role Deviation / Gender-Role Nonconformity
Gender-role deviation / Gender-role nonconformity – a deviation of a person’s behavior from the prescribed patterns of femininity and masculinity characteristic of a particular sociocultural space.
Deviations from gender roles may be either positive or negative. Changes in the character of gender roles, when forms of behavior of men and women that were considered unacceptable at previous historical stages come to be regarded as traditional in the present, may be classified as progressive.
Other deviations, which are not progressive in character, are regarded as disharmonious and sometimes even as pathological, although the boundaries of their acceptability in public opinion do not remain constant and tend to shift toward greater tolerance (Hornostai, 2004, pp. 149–150).
