Gender-Role Disharmony
Gender-role disharmony – a term used in certain psychological frameworks to describe persistent difficulties in integrating or enacting gender-related roles in ways that support a person’s well-being, autonomy, and effective interaction with others.
Such difficulties may involve internal conflict between personal identity and external gender expectations, dependent or developmentally regressive patterns in relationships, or a limited capacity to perform particular social and family roles. Within this framework, gender-role infantilism and gender-role insufficiency are distinguished as specific forms of gender-role disharmony.
Gender-role disharmony should not be equated with gender nonconformity or with a person’s departure from traditional gender norms. It is relevant only when the experienced conflict or behavioural pattern causes significant distress or impairs interpersonal functioning.
