Matronymic
Matronymic – a component of a person’s full name derived from the given name, nickname, or occupation of the mother or another female ancestor in the maternal line. In other words, it is a name element formed from the mother’s name, or a family name derived from a maternal nickname or designation.
Examples include surnames such as Babin, Babich, Soldatkin, Kupchikhin, Mashkin, and Evdokhin, which historically may indicate descent from, or association with, a mother or female ancestor.
A matronymic, transmitted through the mother’s line, is the counterpart of a patronymic, which is derived from the father’s name.
