Gender Discrimination

Gender discrimination – unequal treatment, exclusion, restriction, disadvantage, or denial of rights and opportunities on the basis of a person’s gender, gender identity, gender expression, or perceived gender.

Gender discrimination may be direct, when a person is treated less favourably explicitly because of gender, or indirect, when apparently neutral rules, practices, or institutions disproportionately disadvantage particular gender groups. It may occur in employment, education, healthcare, politics, family life, access to resources, public services, and other areas of social life.

Gender discrimination may operate at interpersonal, institutional, and structural levels and may intersect with other forms of inequality, including those related to race, class, age, disability, sexuality, and ethnicity.
