Gender Policy
Gender policy – a system of principles, goals, strategies, institutional mechanisms, and practical measures through which states, international organizations, political institutions, and other public actors address gender relations and seek to prevent and eliminate gender-based discrimination and inequality.
Gender policy aims to ensure substantive equality in rights, opportunities, participation, representation, access to resources, decision-making, and social protection for people of different genders. It involves identifying and removing structural barriers, challenging discriminatory norms and practices, and taking into account the different social consequences that laws, policies, and institutional decisions may have for different gender groups.
A comprehensive gender policy integrates a gender perspective across all areas of public policy while also allowing for targeted measures where particular groups experience persistent disadvantage or underrepresentation. It may also take an intersectional approach by considering how gender interacts with class, age, ethnicity, disability, sexuality, and other dimensions of social inequality.
